The ugly and often violent scenes which were played out in the streets of Australia during the weekend, further demonstrate the growing need for a community education campaign on the benefits of migration and multiculturalism to Australia, says Migration Institute of Australia, National President, Angela Chan FMIA.
Ms Chan’s comments come at the conclusion of the protests held in 16 cities across the country at the weekend. At the majority of the protests, counter-protesters were in attendance to show their support of Australia’s multicultural society and migration programme.
“The protests and counter-protests during the weekend demonstrated that migration often polarises the Australian society. Migrants have played and will continue to play an essential role in building a strong Australian economy and a vibrant multicultural society made up of the all ethnic groups and religions”, said Ms Chan.
